I enjoy the level of both routine and flexibility that comes with this role - I like that everyday is different & you never know what problems will arise, but at the same time a level of routine still remains.

As the sole graduate engineer in NSW, I've had the chance to collaborate with various departments. My initial rotation was in the technical lab, where I not only learned a great deal but also helped the team complete a significant amount of pending work and supported them during a NATA audit, marking a personal milestone. Presently, I'm in my second rotation at the quarries, dedicating two months to each. Here, I've acquired insights into the planning, blasting, operations, sales, and environmental aspects of quarry management. Additionally, I was able to assist the quarry team by upgrading their site induction, putting dangerous chemicals in ChemAlert, auditing confined spaces, creating isolation maps, taking part in a few blasting operations, and even stomping a bomb.

Pros and cons of working at Adbri

Pros

  • For engineers, working time is quite flexible, I am happy that I can start work at 7am and leave at 3pm so able to play golf after work.

  • Rotating through different teams in Finance department offers invaluable exposure to various financial management aspects from CapEX to mastering group finance operations.

  • The people and their positive attitude are the best parts of working for Hy-Tec/Adbri.

  • I’ve worked with people from various departments ever since. Everyone I’ve worked with has been kind and always willing to help you, no matter how busy they are.

  • I can go talk to any management from any department about anything, and they will sincerely listen and assist you.

Cons

    • When I start at the company and your manager resigns shortly after your arrival.

    • Fortunately, I've not experienced anything worse, but I feel that dealing with IT is the one downside of working for this organization.

    • Not much going on socially.

    • Sometimes the amount of pressure/stress people are under to meet KPI’s/avoid other incidents.

    • A lot of work, and people are spread very thin and therefore things sometimes struggle to get done.
