Applied on Linkedin, invited for a quick call to discuss the role, followed by an in-person interview and received confirmation of the job a few days later. Very easy and accommodating given I was overseas at the time and had to set up the call via zoom.

I was interviewed by two senior people where I talked about my previous work experiences, skills I can bring to company, my career goals and how it aligns with Northrop. This was then followed by a series of situational and scenarios-based questions.

I was accepted as an undergraduate in 2022. The application selection process was very competitive and was done by HR. Interview process was done by engineers to see if the candidates are good fit to the company. I think this strategy is very good to assess whether a candidate has the aptitude and sufficient basic knowledge to join the company.

After Northrop's recruitment received the CV, they followed up with a call to discuss what I wanted from the company, about what my future goals were. After that they asked me to visit the office and speak to the Electrical engineers for an in person interview.

The interview process was straight forward. It contains a phone interview, with 2 in-person interviews, if successful. In the interview, you are asked some situational and technical questions. The interviewers were very friendly and made me less nervous during the process.

The first interview is asking some technical questions about what I learnt in the university and share my experiences. The second interview is meeting with the principal structural manager in the office and share my experiences to him.

There's usually two sages of interviews: First, you will be interviewed by very experienced company staff who will assess your theory as well as some me practical questions to test your ability how approach a problem. In the second interview, you be interviewed by another group of senior staff to reassess you. They are very friendly which give a confidence and a feel at home.

In my interviews, I was asked a mix of behavioral and technical questions. Some behavioral questions included: "Can you describe a time when you worked as part of a team?" and "How do you manage competing deadlines?" The technical questions involved scenarios where I had to discuss how I would approach structural design challenges, such as analyzing load paths or ensuring stability in a particular structure. They were looking to see how I approached problems and applied engineering principles.

Then I was asked basic technical questions that tested my basic knowledge and problem-solving skill. The more challenging technical questions are aimed to see how I solve problems with or without guidance.

Prepare by going over the requirements of the specific role and ensuring they align with what you would like to do in a career. Go over typical interview questions and come prepared with answers and examples of past experience whether from uni or the industry. Be personable and ensure you also use the interview to ask any questions you have and assess if the role is a good fit for you.

Read up on basic engineering concept and ensure you have a clear understanding of civil design. Read up on Northrop and what they have designed/constructed so you know what type of work is expected. Be confident and positive and promote yourself as a social personality

Just be yourself! It's hard to pretend and not sustainable in the long run. You want to ensure you are a good fit for the team, but that they are also a good fit for you and meet what you want out of a company. I recommend really thinking about why you want to get into the field you are applying for, and having an idea of the work environment that you would thrive best in.

My advice for candidates applying to Northrop would be to prepare thoroughly, not just for the technical aspects, but also to show how you can collaborate and communicate effectively. Make sure to review fundamental structural engineering concepts and be ready to discuss real-world applications. I used the STAR method to prepare for my interview and I think that was really useful

Don't be nervous and just be yourself, do a bit of reflection on what you want to accomplish when joining the company, compile all the achievements and activity that you've done in the past, and prepare what you want to talk about in the interview during the introduction stage. For the technical questions, prepare for the basics from university course and for the more experienced candidates, it's better to reflect back on past project and lesson learned). Learning how to use softwares and automate processes are very invaluable skill to have and would definitely boost success in the application and interview process.

They usually wouldn't ask technical question, they want to see the energy and the enthusiasm a candidate would bring to work. Speak confidently. Bring questions of your own that you would like to ask them. Think of this as normal conversation amongst people of industry.

Teamwork, relationships, and culture seem to be a big part of the job. So if you can match the vibe of your manager, your work will benefit greatly from that. If you can show that you can work effectively in a team, they are happy to train you in other aspects of your job you might not be totally confident in - such as technical or consulting.
