Graduate Analyst at Quantium
Bachelor of Computer Science
7.00 AM
My alarm goes off at 7.00, but if I'm being honest, I don't actually drag myself out of bed until 7.30. It's Thursday, which means I'm heading to the client office today - I'm there Tuesday through Thursday each week, with Fridays at the Quantium office. The morning routine needs to be quick as I've got to be out the door by 8.05!
8.12 AM
I hop on the train for my commute. I’m often cutting it super fine and have ended up running to the train but I usually make it. I can sometimes make it to my morning meeting on time if I get the 8.20 train but it’s a bit of a gamble!
8.40 AM
I arrive at the client office, where I'm currently working on a project for a major pharmaceutical wholesaler. We're in the handover phase of our work. It’s been such a fascinating project so far, we’re creating a huge data capability for the client to give them visibility into the true profitability of each article, and what factors play into it.
8.45 AM
First up is our client-facing stand-up. It's meant to be 15 minutes, but we’ve been known to have them become more like 45! Just the nature of consulting haha! Since it's not really a proper stand-up, our team holds our own straight afterwards to properly align on the day's goals.
9.30 AM
After our internal stand-up wraps up, it's time for the crucial coffee run. Sometimes we treat ourselves to the local café, but other days we make do with the somewhat grim Blend 43 sachets from the client office kitchen. It's quite a contrast to our Quantium office - no fun snacks or proper coffee machine here!
9.45 AM
Though I've been at work for an hour, now is when I properly start my day. I spend 15 minutes going through emails, planning my work, and noting down my meetings for the day.
10.00 AM
This morning’s main focus is documentation - I'm cleaning up and commenting all the code that underpins our recent 100+ page analytics report for the client. I work through each piece of analysis and add comments with the help of Claude (my favourite AI colleague), and then ensure everything runs correctly before pushing to Bitbucket and our shared drive.
11.00 AM
Time for a quick break! I'm a firm believer in hourly breaks to maintain productivity, so I try to rally the team for a kitchen run. There's usually at least one taker for a 5-10 minute stretch and snack break.
11.05 AM
Back at my desk, I prepare for our 11.30 client meeting. We're discussing the future initiatives we've proposed for their pricing strategy. Our recent pricing trial was a massive win - 200k profit uplift in the first two weeks! This success has really built trust with the client. I spend this time refreshing my knowledge of the report.
11.30 AM
The client meeting today is really a workshop about future pricing trials and initiatives. I, alongside another junior analyst on my team, lead the discussion today, as we'd done much of the underlying analytics. Our client is a GM so it’s such an awesome opportunity to get to present my work to quite a senior audience, especially as a grad! The main action point from this meeting is to create a detailed playbook of all our knowledge and ideas for each initiative - that'll be my afternoon focus.
12.30 PM
Lunch time! Special occasion today as one of our team members is finishing up on the project tomorrow. All six of us head to the local kebab shop, where one of my colleagues has become such a regular that we always score free Turkish delight! Usually I pack lunch for client office days (though Fridays in the Q office are different - the health team shares pizza and does the crossword together, which is always fun).
1.30 PM
Back to work with headphones on for an hour of focus time, doing an info dump of everything from the morning's meeting.
2.30 PM
Quick break to the kitchen for a drink, and a snack!
2.40 PM
I connect in with the senior analyst who's been developing a template for our 'initiative playbook'. We discuss the best approach, and I dive into populating the document.
2.55 PM
Here's where Claude really shines! I feed the info dump I spent the last hour writing and the template into Claude (the AI tool that Quantium encourages us to use). It's brilliant for tasks like this, along with documenting code, writing emails, creating meeting summaries, idea generation and so much more. I just provide the information and specify the format and tone I want, then I can review and refine the output. It's a huge time-saver and productivity booster.
3.40 PM
Quick check-in with the senior analyst for initial feedback. We set a timeline goal to have this ready for the client by tomorrow afternoon, including a Gantt chart for the timelines. I'm particularly keen to wrap this up efficiently since tomorrow we have a 'lunch and learn' session on best coding practices (which is actually primarily made up of examples of bad practices and huge mistakes from the past - always entertaining!).
4.40 PM
Quick break before our daily checkout.
4.45 PM
Team daily checkout - we update everyone on progress, check our planner board, go through all the tickets, and finalise evening expectations. It's also our chance to connect with our team member who's working from India for the next few weeks.
5.15 PM
I have a netball game tonight and need to leave the office by 6.00, so I put in another 45 minutes to set myself up for tomorrow. I want to be able to finish by 5.30 tomorrow since we’re going out for team drinks!
6.00 PM
Time to head home! It's been a really busy few months on the project, so it's nice to leave while it's still bright outside.
