Sustainability at Urban Utilities

Aging infrastructure in the wastewater network is not being upgraded at a rapid enough pace and not enough funding is being allocated to mitigate the spread of fire ants.

Our scientists are always developing innovations to address sustainability. One of our latest ones was the creation of a flushable wet wipe, to minimise the amount of clogging and waste that ends up in our sewerage pipes.

From my limited observations I would like to question our commitment to the environment from a tech and furniture perspective. A colleague of mine had a cracked iPhone screen and they decided to replace the entire device. With correct insurance, and a partnership with the manufacturer of the product, we could have had the screen repaired in a matter of hours which would have saved hundreds of dollars AND the mining of rare earth metals and minerals that go into making a mobile device. I would also like to see the environmental specs of the monitors, keyboards, chairs, desks etc we use as it seems like Dell do not use recycled plastic or recycled components internally.

Its well known that we should be environmentally friendly in our work but also in our day to day lives. We have several recycling bins for different wastes and they're located on every floor. We have reusable or biodegradable cutlery, cups, mugs, plates etc available. There's often signage in the bathrooms and kitchens. There has been a few times we have done free barista coffee if you bring a keep cup to encourage good habits.

The company is always looking for ways to improve our impact on the environment, especially through innovative processes.
